Rose is an upper-class woman who hates her relationship with her fiancé. One day, they go on a trip onboard a well-known ship. While sailing, she meets a poor man named Jack. They fall in love right after she threatens to jump off the ship. They keep seeing each other, although Rose’s mother does not agree. In the end, the ship hits an iceberg and sinks. Jack dies. Eventually, Rose decides to tell this tragic love story to the world.
Travis is a veteran of Vietnam who decides to work as a cab driver at night in the dirty and dangerous streets of New York. Although he hates this job, since the people he sees on the streets and the ones her serves seem like scum to him, it’s the only thing he can do at night because he can’t sleep.
One day, during a service, he sees a beautiful woman entering a building dedicated to a politician’s campaign, Travis becomes obsessed with her and watches her every day from his cab.
Eventually, he plucks up the courage and asks her out for coffee. He discovers that her name is Betsy and that she is totally dedicated to helping Charles Palantine’s political campaign. Then, Travis invites her to the the movies and she accepts.
One night, a prostitute gets into his cab, Travis notices that she is just a girl. The girl’s pimp violently pulls her out of the cab and gives Travis a crumpled bill. Travis keeps it to remember the girl.
Then, Travis brings Betsy to the movies. Betsy gets mad because it is a pornographic movie and leaves, but Travis doesn’t understand why she is mad. He feels angry and decides to hurt Betsy, not physically but emotionally. He wants to kill Charles Palantine.
Before he executes his plan to kill Palantine, he visits the prostitute. He discovers the name of the pimp, Matthew. He also discovers that the girl’s name is Iris. Next, he explains to Iris that he wants to save her, but she appears to be in love with Matthew and doesn’t want to leave. Travis tells her that he will be in touch, but he is very worried.
At this point, Travis’ madness is unleashed. He buys a bunch of guns, shaves his head and leaves a letter and all his money to Iris. He tries to kill Palantine while he is giving a speech, but is discovered by security and fails the assassination.
Travis was planning to die that day, so having seen his first attempt fail, he now wants to kill the pimps and save Iris. He arrives to the place and starts killing all the men he sees. He receives some shots, but he achieves to kill every pimp and client. Near death, he is taken to the hospital.
