Jack was always late. Although he was very smart, he was not very disciplined. He would always forget to set his alarm which would make him miss important things. The consequences of arriving late were usually not a big deal until one day when he realized he had to do something.
It was Monday and it was raining. Jack didn’t wake up on time so he had to run. He literally had to run. He was going down the street, the same one he would always pass by when out of nowhere, a car appeared.
The driver was fast enough to avoid hitting Jack but instead, the car went off the road and crashed into a corner store.
Several people got injured and Jack couldn’t help feeling guilty. Both his parents and friends would talk to him every day to convince him it was not his fault. However, he would always say: If I could go back in time, I would start my day over.
He repeated this so many times that he actually started to plan how to do it. Jack was a genius in physics, math and chemistry. In an attempt to fix what had happened, Jack built the prototype of a time machine. His goal was to go back to that raining Monday morning, wake up earlier and avoid the accident.
—I’ve been working on this for weeks. I'm ready to test it —he said as he turned it on.
A strange noise came from the sky but everything else seemed to be intact. Jack was going to try again when he looked at the time and he noticed he had successfully traveled 5 minutes to the past. He cried with joy.
—5 minutes is great, but the accident was caused by me. I have to fix it and I won’t rest until I do it.
He did some math, adjusted some things here and there… and he tried again.
It wasn’t 5 minutes this time: he actually managed to travel back one day.
Jack couldn’t believe it. He had created the first functional time machine and he was getting closer and closer to his goal.
Jack’s parents and friends noticed his mood had changed. He kept on spending most of his time in the basement but at least he wasn’t feeling down anymore, at least that's what they thought.
A few days passed and Jack was ready to try again. He miscalculated some numbers the first time and even though he was quite unsure, he decided to try again.
A louder noise came from the ground. Jack looked at the time and nothing had changed. Feeling a bit disappointed he went into his room and found himself in bed. He had traveled in time and space…. and he was now looking at himself in bed, hours before the accident.
It took him some minutes to process what was going on but he was happy because he had managed to “arrive” at the perfect time. He woke himself up by throwing a dirty shirt over the sleeping Jack. He woke up, changed his clothes and headed out. He wasn’t in a hurry after all so he calmly walked to the school.
Jack, the traveler, was content. He managed to travel back in time, prevent the accident from happening and save the day. But, what now?
Well, he never thought about how to come back to his time. He hid in the attic trying to figure out how to travel back to the future. He did his calculations over and over until he felt ready to try again.
Intending to travel a few months into the future, Jack ended up traveling over a decade back. He couldn’t understand what was wrong. He pulled his hair and cried as he was complaining about his terrible luck. But he wouldn’t give up.
Jack filled the room with math equations and cables. He was determined to fix the situation, again.
